College Is Bullshit
Written on Aug 28

For the record, I'm 21 and I don't currently go to college.

Have I been to college?

Yeah, you could say that. I spent a year on and off in community college taking different courses and exploring my options.

Do I want to go to college in the future?

Yes, I do. However, the college I intend to go to caters to my personal needs and teaches me exactly what I want to learn, unlike most universities and community colleges. The only downside to attending my dream school is a measily $64,000. I'm sure Paris Hilton spends more on that rat-looking dog of hers in a month.

Will I likely go to my 'dream school' anytime soon?

No fucking way. Unless of course someone is going to donate $64,000, pay for my re-location to downtown San Diego (which includes monthly rent and utilities), and pay for all my supplies and books. Psh, yeah right! I have a better chance of winning the lottery than I do going to my college.

Now here's the point of this rant:
The biggest misconception in today's society is that you need to go to college in order to be successful. I'll tell you right now that is bullshit. A solid work ethic and a little bit of ambition can get you very far in this world sans college. Adults, teachers, supervisors, and CEO's will all tell you that college is essential to your future. Anyone who preaches the college rhetoric and tells you it's absolutely necessary to attend college to be successful is just pulling your leg.

Now here is why I think college is bullshit:
I graduated high school in 2001. I quickly realized that I couldn't afford college and entered the workforce at 18. That was the best decision I ever made in my life. Now, not only do I have a job that I could potentially call a "career", but I'm in management. At the moment, I make more money (and have more things financially working in my direction) than anyone in my graduating class. AND I DID IT WITHOUT COLLEGE. I'm not bragging -- I'm just making a point. However, I still intend to go to college, but instead of having mommy and daddy pay for it, I can pay for it out of my own pocket and go to school at my own leisure. Then if I think college is a waste of time, I can leave with the assurance that I know my future isn't going down the drain simply because I already established myself financially.

Truthfully, college is merely an extended version of high school. I've seen kids quickly squander away mommy and daddy's college savings for a simple business degree. Wow, a business degree. Big deal. 20,000 other people graduate with the same degree every year. Their business degree isn't going to give them leverage or a starting point in the "real world". Just because you attain a "degree" doesn't mean you have work-oriented skills. Nor does it mean that you'll get a job right out of college. The real truth is: colleges won't be honest with you because their main concern is your tuition money.

Basically, that means alot of intelligent kids with COLLEGE DEGREES are forced to enter the workforce every year and start at the bottom. These very same kids end up working for me at minimum wage. Yet, they have a degree and I don't. Last time I checked, a degree doesn't put food in your mouth or a roof over your head. Nor does a degree guarantee you a job.

A couple days ago I was talking to my girlfriend and she told me she failed her first-day quiz for her new writing class. I asked her why she failed the quiz and she just smirked and said, "Tell me the -correct- definition of a sentence and then I'll tell you why I failed". That sounded simple enough to me. I'm a writer for christ sakes so I should know this. I responded with, "a sentence is a group of words used to formulate a thought".

Wrong.

According to her teacher, "a sentence is a complete thought." I'll agree with that, a sentence IS a complete thought. However, my girlfriend answered the question almost verbatim to my response, yet she still failed!? How is *our* answer wrong? How can she fail when our answer is technically correct? Is this the shit I'm wasting money on to go to college? Give me a fucking break. I'd rather watch Mcgyver and learn how to disable a bomb using a toothpick then go to a class that teaches bullshit about sentences. Oh, and here's the kicker: my girlfriend's major is FORENSICS.

She's been in college for nearly two years yet her curriculum requires her to take bullshit courses like the aforementioned writing class? Yet her major is FORENSIC SCIENCE? I don't know about you, but if you can make it to college, complete the first two years of general education, then I'm sure you know WHAT THE FUCK A SENTENCE IS AND HOW TO WRITE ONE. Instead of having classes in criminology, chemistry, or molecular biology, which -APPLY TO THE MAJOR-, they have classes in writing and other pointless topics. In my opinion, what a waste of time, money, and resources.

If my tuition money ever went to funding idiotic courses outside of my major, then not only do I want a refund, but I want a written statement confirming that colleges care more about tuition money than they do the students. Not that I'd ever get it.

Colleges are all about money, not education. The moral of this rant? Colleges are bullshit. You don't need a degree to be successful. Nor do you need a 'college education'. All you really need is a postive mindset, good decision making ability, a hard work ethic, and a little common sense.

Ironically, you can't learn any of those traits in college.
